Cross-border demonstration calls for peace

Demonstrators on both sides of the Detroit River gathered Wednesday asking world leaders to advocate for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza.

In Windsor, about two dozen people gathered in Bert Weeks Memorial Park to raise their flags in solidarity with those gathered in Detroit.

"We have to be united in the one cause. They're humans, it's devastating seeing all these images and all these things happen in front of our eyes. It's like watching a horror movie but it's reality," said Rasha Zaid, demonstration organizer.

Reports estimate more than 15,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. Around 1,200 people died in Israel.

Zaid shared she has personally lost 80 members of her family.

"There's no safe zone for them, they are running around in circles trying to escape death and it's devastating," said Zaid. "We're watching it live and our leaders are not taking a strong stand against it and it's heart breaking."

She is urging all world leaders and members of the community to take a stand.

"Revive your humanity. You don't have to have a certain background nor a connection with these people, literally revive your humanity. We were born humans to be able to sense and feel and be nice to each other. Kindness speaks a lot louder than violence. Stop funding war crimes, stop giving weapons, weapons do not speak peace," said Zaid.

The Windsor for Palestine group holds demonstrations locally around two times a week.
