The Municipality of Grey Highlands will wait for a decision on a new council chamber until after the upcoming election.
Council held a special meeting on Thursday to go over items that required direction before the lame duck period kicked in Friday.
That included an opportunity to lease the former Kids and Us facility in Markdale from Grey County to establish a Council Chamber and associated municipal office.
However, Councillor Joel Loughead said it didn't seem right for current council to make this call.
"This is a big decision and I understand the urgency with which staff brought this forward, but it comes with a big price tag at a time when we're facing increasing budgetary pressures," he said. "I have a feeling that the next term of council may very well not agree with this decision and its their council chambers and their decision to make."
Staff requested a maximum upset limit of $150,000 for procurement and contract awards for the space at 206 Toronto Street.
CAO Karen Govan there have been talks about an agreement for a while, as current chambers don't meet accessibility standards.
"We've been discussing this for 18 months, it's not new to council," she told members. "It's been an ongoing discussion that we have been looking at Kids and Us and council's had an opportunity to tour the space. If we want to go ahead with the space, we don't want the County to advertise it and risk losing it. But currently we are not compliant with accessibility."
The matter was deferred to the first regular council meeting of the new term.
