Unifor, Environmental Defence hosting meeting on transition to electric vehicles

What can Windsor and Canada expect as the economy switches to electric vehicles?

Unifor and Environmental Defence Canada hope to answer that question and others at a meeting on Wednesday night at the Unifor Hall on Turner Road.

The two organizations are hosting a community town hall titled "Windsor Speaks: Our Transition to Electric Vehicles." It's an opportunity to learn more about jobs, exchange ideas, and send a clear message to political and business leaders.

The meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

The meeting will include workers from across the automotive industry, local industry and community stakeholders, officials from the Windsor-Essex District Chamber of Commerce, Invest WindsorEssex, Indigenous leaders, students from the University of Windsor, and policy experts.

"As Canada's industry and economy change to create a sustainable future, we want to hear directly from affected workers and communities about their hopes and visions, needs and concerns," said a release from Unifor and Environmental Defence Canada.

Construction on the NextStar EV Battery plant on Banwell Road is well underway and should start producing batteries for electric vehicles in 2025. The Windsor Assembly Plant and Brampton Assembly Plants will undergo a $3.6-billion retool for electric vehicles in the new year.
