First ever Council Cup shows off new downtown beach volleyball court

Windsor City Councillors Kieran McKenzie and Angelo Marignani crushed Councillors Renaldo Agostino and Jim Morrison in the first ever Council Cup as they showed off the new downtown beach volleyball court.

"I had a really exciting and fun time winning the council cup, here in the first match ever played on this volleyball court," said Councillor McKenzie. "I'm just really excited about this amazing space and how it's going to be utilized over the next three years."

Over 300 tonnes of sand was brought in to transform the vacant land on Ouellette Avenue into a beach volleyball court for Beach Bash 2023.

"We're bringing in stands, lights are going in, still a lot to be done but it's unbelievable that we can bring in 300 tonnes of sand and make it into a volleyball amphitheatre in such a short period of time," said Neil McTavish, tournament coordinator.

To date, there are around 60 teams signed up for the tournament running from September 8-10, 2023. All proceeds from the event will go to Rotary (1918) and be directed toward initiatives to end homelessness in Windsor-Essex.

After the tournament, the court will stay in downtown Windsor and be available to rent by community groups.
