Windsor police probe assaults posted online

At least two assaults that were posted on social media are being investigated by Windsor police.

Investigators were made aware on Monday of two incidents where suspects appeared to target victims who were alone. Each attack was recorded, then posted on social media, according to Constable Talya Natyshak.

The first took place at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of a restaurant on Wyandotte Street East near Goyeau. This incident involved anywhere from five to seven suspects. Police are asking business owners or residents to check any security camera footage taken between 3:45 a.m. and 5 a.m., and give them a call if they find anything unusual.

The second attack happened at around 5:20 a.m. in the area of Church Street and Pitt Street West. Police believe that the suspects were in the downtown core during the time between the two incidents. Business owners in this area are asked to check any camera footage taken between 4:45 a.m. and 5:45 a.m.

Natyshak said both of the victims were lone males and the attacks appeared to be random. One of the victims suffered a serious injury.

"Violence of any kind in our community will not be tolerated," said Windsor Police Acting Chief Jason Bellaire. "The fact that the two random assaults were recorded and shared is disturbing. We understand the videos will have a far-reaching impact on our community, and we encourage the public to come forward with any information and footage that may assist investigators in apprehending these suspects."

Anyone with information on any of the suspects, or on either of the two incidents, is urged to call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4830. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers to be eligible for a cash reward, at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
