City cancels May birthday party, other spring events

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in more cancellations for events from the City of Windsor.

The city "reluctantly" announced Friday that springtime events such as the perennial plant sale, and the city's annual birthday party and Mayor's Walk have been cancelled.  Recreation and culture programming for the spring months has also been scrapped -- a move that facility closures have made inevitable.

Mayor Drew Dilkens has not given up hope, though, as the birthday celebration and plant sale may be rescheduled later in the summer.

"As the impacts of COVID-19 continue to impact all aspects of our daily lives, it is vital that we take all possible steps to flatten the curve in our community," said Dilkens. "It is my hope that these signature events, as well as regular culture and recreation programming, can be restarted this summer."

The perennial plant sale is a fundraiser for the Paul Martin Gardens. The annual birthday celebration, which is held on the riverfront, follows the Mayor's Walk along the water's edge and is usually held the last Saturday in May.

For residents who have signed up for cultural or recreational programming and submitted payment for them, credits will be applied to accounts where needed.

Windsor's Summer 2020 guide for recreation and culture programs is due to be published in May.  The city said it was its hope that programs will be resumed as soon as possible, subject to guidance from provincial officials and local public health experts.
