Tenants remain out as cleanup at Westcourt Place continues

Almost two weeks after a fire forced the evacuation of tenants at a downtown Windsor high-rise building; the cleanup is ongoing.

A note on Westcourt Place's Facebook page said work to clean the hallways, and ductwork started last week.

"We are removing all the ceiling tiles in the halls. They are cleaning all the smoke and dust throughout the building," read the entry. "Once this is done, we will wait for the reports from the hygienist."

The tenants were forced from their homes back on November 12 when a fire started on the second floor of the parking garage sending smoke throughout the building.

Some of the 200 tenants are staying with family or friends, while others have been forced to take up residence in hotels.

The water was turned back on last Wednesday. Power to some parts of the building was restored last Monday.

On Friday, investigators from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal ruled the fire accidental. It said an electrical failure started the blaze but has not yet released a damage estimate.

Meanwhile, the law firm Strosberg Sasso Sutts LLP has launched a class-action lawsuit aimed at recovering costs for both the commercial and residential tenants.
