Now that Irek Kusmiercyzk is the new MP for Windsor-Tecumseh, his old seat on Windsor City Council needs filling.
Monday night, councillors voted to hold a by-election on April 27, 2020, with a budget of $120,000. They also had the option of appointing a candidate to the seat.
Manager of Records and Elections Terri Knight Lepain told BlackburnNews.com councillors are expected to pass a bylaw at a special council meeting on January 13 to make it official.
"Tuesday, January 14, we'll open the nomination period, which is when interested parties can come forward and put forth their candidacies," said Knight Lepain. "There will be candidate packages available for pickup. There will be information on our website."
The deadline to file nominations is 2 p.m. Friday, March 13, and candidates will have 45 days to campaign.
"Once someone puts in their nomination papers, they are considered a candidate, and they can start campaigning," Knight Lepain said.
It will be a busy time for Knight Lepain as she organizes the by-election. A current voters' list will come from MPAC, voter notification cards will be mailed out, and polling stations will also be inspected. She said voting equipment would need to be secured, and finally, staff will be hired to man the polling stations.
There are approximately 18,000 eligible voters in Ward 7.
