Snowfall, temperature Monday could break records

Police across the region were kept busy Monday morning with the number of crashes on area roads, and we have not even got all the snow forecast yet.

Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory calling for ten to 15 centimetres of snow across much of Southwestern Ontario by midnight. While the snow is not expected to be heavy, it will persist all day long, creating slushy driving conditions.

In Windsor-Essex, Meteorologist Peter Kimball told BlackburnNews.com Monday morning the region could see a couple of records fall by the wayside.

"We're looking for a low tonight of -7 C," he explained. "The record for the 11th is actually -5 C, so we're probably going to break that record. For the 12th, it's -7 C. We'll be pretty close to record territory."

The record for snowfall for November 11 is 8.9 cm, and for overnight low on November 12 is -5 C. The average low at this time of year is 2 C.

It does not sound like drivers will get much of a break on Tuesday morning, either.

"There's snow squalls expected to develop overnight off of Lake Huron, affecting mostly Sarnia-Lambton County, but they may well squeak into Windsor-Essex County as well," said Kimball.

He theorized part of the reason there may be so many crashes Monday and Tuesday is simply because many people do not have their snow tires on yet, or believe they will not need them.

Traffic on Highway 401 was brought to a standstill Monday morning by a series of crashes in both the west and eastbound lanes near Manning Road. LaSalle Police also closed the westbound lanes of Laurier Parkway after a construction vehicle tipped over on its side. On Highway 3, a caller to BlackburnNews.com said another crash slowed traffic east of Manning Road.
