Lock Out Cancer Surpasses Goal

A month-long campaign aimed at supporting programs for women with breast cancer has managed to raise more money than expected in just one month.

The "Lock Out Cancer" campaign started in early May to fund things like breast reconstruction, areola tattooing, chemo pumps, and video conferencing equipment.

While it collected donations from the public, it also sold locks and necklaces. By June 3, it had raised more than $125,000.

Those who bought a lock are encouraged to lace it around the healing garden wall around the Windsor Cancer Centre's memorial.

"There's strength in numbers, so if you're all there together locking out cancer, I think it sends a big message to women in our community who have been struggling," said Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation Executive Director Houida Kassem.

About 1,200 new female cancer patients come to the centre each year.
