The City of Owen Sound is moving ahead with a significant infrastructure project this summer, announcing the start of a major roof renovation at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre, home to the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce.
The $850,000 capital investment will see the replacement of 40,000 square feet of roofing, upgraded insulation, new roof membranes, improved roof drains, and the replacement of skylights. The upgrades are designed to improve safety, increase energy efficiency, and extend the life of the building for at least 20 years.
Set-up and mobilization for the project will begin the week of July 14, with full construction getting underway on July 21. The work is expected to take between six and eight weeks to complete.
The City says this project reflects its ongoing commitment to maintaining and investing in public facilities that support wellness, recreation, and community connection.

Throughout construction, the City and YMCA will work closely with contractor Spinton Roofing Ltd. to coordinate logistics and minimize disruption to services. This includes maintaining access to at least one pool during work on roof drains, making temporary access changes during skylight replacement, and providing clear signage and public updates throughout the process.

The Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre is a vital community hub, with the YMCA’s annual operating budget at approximately $13.8 million. Serving Owen Sound and Grey Bruce residents since 1877, the YMCA offers inclusive programs for people of all ages and abilities.
