Fecht Aims For Fourth Straight Bridge Race Win

Warren, Michigan's Matt Fecht is hoping to win his fourth straight YMCA/CHOK Bridge Race on Sunday.

Last year, he topped the field with a time of 31:49, 51 seconds ahead of Sarnia's Shawn Master.

Fecht says he'd like to get close to the half hour mark this time around.

"Three years ago, I was really close, like 30:04," says Fecht. "But, I'm starting to get a little older here and not quite recovering as quickly as I used to. I've got a marathon coming up in two weeks, so the speed isn't exactly there right now. But, we're going to give it a shot to beat last year's time and at least come out with a win."

Fecht says there's some strategy to racing over the bridge.

"If you try and sprint your way up that bridge, you're going to be in trouble, you're going to gas yourself out," says Fecht. "As much as you're going to recover on the downhill, the pounding that you're doing uphill is going to burn out the quads and that takes you about a quarter to half a mile to recover and get back on to that flat pace and get going."

The 40th annual race gets underway around 8am at Pine Grove Park in Port Huron and wraps up in Canatara Park.

Over 750 runners are expected to participate.
