A section of Highway 402 was closed Wednesday due to hazardous road conditions.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of unsafe road conditions on the westbound highway in Plympton-Wyoming.
As a result, Highway 402 westbound was closed between Oil Heritage Road and Mandaumin Road.
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) confirmed to Sarnia News Today that the road buckled due to extreme heat.
Motorists were advised to exit at Oil Heritage Road and detour following London Line to Mandaumin Road to re-enter the highway.
The closure comes as Sarnia-Lambton continues to battle an extended heat wave with daytime highs around 31 to 35 degrees Celsius, and humidex values in the low 40s.
According to Environment Canada, the temperature climbed to 34 C at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, with humidex values around 46.
Last year, the extreme heat resulted in closures along the highway due to evolving concrete issues.
OPP said the latest road closure was expected to remain in place for an extended period.
In a video posted to social media on July 2 at 1:48 p.m., Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said highway repair work was ongoing in two separate sections, at Oil Heritage Road and near Mandaumin Road.
The westbound lanes reopened to traffic shortly before 9 a.m. on July 3.
The MTO said temporary repairs were completed but did not specify when/if follow-up repairs would take place.
Lambton OPP thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during this closure.
