Guns and fake police vest seized by SPS

The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) pulled several weapons off the streets Wednesday.

At around 6 p.m., members of the Major Case Action Team (MCAT) and Emergency Response Team (ERT) conducted a high risk traffic stop in the area of Russell Street and Durand Street.

The driver, a 46-year-old Sarnia man, was arrested for unauthorized possession of a weapon.

Officers then searched a home on Devonshire Road and seized a loaded .380 Taurus handgun, leather holster, .22 caliber Cooey rifle, shotgun shells, ammunition and a blue ballistic vest or bulletproof vest.

Also concerning for police, officers recovered a black tactical vest with an old Sarnia Police Service crest sewn on.

"This combination of weapons and a ballistic vest with police insignia is obviously extremely concerning," said Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis. "The seized police flash is a historical one that has not been in use for many years.  It is not a police issued vest nor a likeness of current police equipment or insignias."

Brian Kenny is charged with 15 firearms related offences including careless storage of a firearm, careless storage of ammunition, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of ammunition for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm.
