Registration deadline approaching for Kinsmen Santa Claus parade

The Sarnia Kinsmen Club's 42nd annual Santa Claus parade is fast approaching and the deadline to register is just days away.

Those looking to put a float in the parade are being asked to submit their application on the club's website by November 15.

Parade Chairman Henry Korstange said this year's theme is “Christmas All Around Town” and floats should be decorated accordingly.

"It's whatever people have in their mind and imagination to what Christmas in your particular area of town is, whether it's downtown or the north end or south end," said Korstange. "You've got a lot of leeway here, but everything has to be lit and is has to follow the theme. Something in your neighbourhood that you're familiar with, whether it's a church or business. We want to make it an enjoyable parade for everyone to see."

Korstange said he's excited for the annual tradition.

Every year thousands of residents and visitors line Christina Street to get a glimpse of this magical parade which has become a holiday staple for thousands of families.

"We're working with volunteers, businesses, industries, service groups, and schools to make sure this is another unforgettable event," he said. "We have also confirmed a Major US band the H.S. Marching Band from Memphis."

Korstange said the parade wouldn't be possible without the community’s support and the dedication of all the volunteers and sponsors.

He said Enbridge has come onboard again as a major sponsor which will help offset some of the costs incurred.

"The Kinsmen Club of Sarnia is also planning to have a float in the parade this year with volunteers collecting food, grocery products and monetary donations along the route which will be shared among the local food banks," he said.

Over the past three years, the Kinsmen Club has collected over $15,000 in monetary donations, and over 6,000 lbs. of non-perishable food, which was divided between the four local food banks.

Donations can also be made by mailing a cheque to the Kinsmen Club of Sarnia Attn: 2023 Santa Claus Parade, PO Box 861 Sarnia, ON, N7T 7J9.

With the generous support of the community along with the collection day at the smart centers, the Kinsmen anticipate the food collection will surpass last year’s donations.

The Santa Claus Parade is set for Saturday, December 2.

As always, it will travel down Christina Street and will start at Exmouth and Christina at 6 p.m. It will then travel south, pass city hall around 6:30 p.m. before ending at Christina and Wellington Street.
