Disaster assessment team visits Warwick following flooding

Members of Ontario's disaster assessment team have visited Warwick Township to evaluate the damage from significant flooding last month.

CAO/Clerk Amanda Gubbels shared the news with council earlier this week, that nine private properties were visited.

"I want to thank our members of the public who allowed them to enter their homes and property and participate in that assessment process," said Gubbels. "Following that assessment we should hear from the province whether that funding window for our public residents may be made available and certainly we will complete all the public notice related to that when we do hear back from the province."

Mayor Todd Case declared a state of emergency on August 24 after widespread flooding washed out roads and damaged properties August 23.

Gubbles said the municipality is working on its claim as well.

"We've also begun the process of application and tracking records to the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance Program for the municipal financial costs," she said.

While the state of emergency was lifted September 1, Zion Line between Bethesda Road and London Line has been closed since the flooding occurred.

"We have been continuing to work with our engineers to get the results of the assessment of both Bear Creek Bridge, as well as Zion Line itself. We will be adding some additional granular on the side of the road by the bridge and also doing some milling and paving and repairing some shoulder drop offs," Gubbels said.

A timeline for the work to be completed had yet to be set.

"We understand people want their road open and we will make every effort to get these repairs done as quickly as possible so we can reopen that road," she said.

Some of the damaged areas on Zion Line had just been repaired with new asphalt before the flooding occurred.
