OPP holding dementia registration day

Lambton OPP and the Sarnia-Lambton Alzheimer Society are partnering to protect those living with dementia.

Residents who know someone with Alzheimer's or dementia can have them registered in case they go missing.

Society Education Coordinator Christine Wright said there are a few things people should bring with them.

"We are looking to have a current photo of the person so that if they do go missing that can be shared right away," said Wright. "It's often people in the community who might be the person who finds them first, so we need all of their current information so we know where they're most likely to go, distinguishing features and all of that. Sometimes the person with dementia doesn't even know they're lost."

An estimated three in five people living with dementia will go missing at some point. If they're lost for over 24 hours, half of them will suffer a significant injury or death.

Registration is taking place on November 14 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the OPP's Corunna detachment.

There is also a session on November 28 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the OPP's Petrolia branch.

Similar events in Point Edward and Sarnia are expected to be announced in the new year.
