High-rise opponents claim notice of public meeting inadequate

A couple of residents neighbouring a proposed 19 storey high-rise claim there was short notice of another public meeting this week.

Sarnia council deferred its decision on a rezoning application for a 100 unit condo development at 135 Water Street October 28.

Council felt tenants from neighbouring buildings -- rather than just the property owners -- should be given an opportunity to air concerns.

Judy MacDonald, who lives in the building just north of the proposed development at 161 B Nelson St., said she and her husband John just received information Tuesday.

"A letter titled "Sarnia Rent-All" came to our mail this afternoon at about 2 p.m.," said MacDonald. "My husband and I, and one other person received this notice. The managers of the building did not receive the notice and the date of the meeting -- which is called an additional public open house for the purpose of discussing neighbour concerns -- is called for 4:30 p.m. Thursday, November 7th at the Vidal Room of the Best Western Inn on Venetian Boulevard."

MacDonald said she wants others to be aware of the meeting.

"The ability to send this information around to other people is somewhat limited. I just think it's slimy or unfair not to give more notice when they were directed to give notice by council."

MacDonald said they will be working to spread the news of the meeting with residents in their building, but hopes other residents in the area will attend as well.
