Hadfield's Hometown Star has a permanent home

King George VI Public School is the new home for a special star recognizing a former star student.

Chris Hadfield's Canada Walk of Fame Hometown Star was unveiled to the students and staff on Tuesday.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said the students got a special message from the former astronaut himself, pre-recorded just for the event.

"Chris gave a very inspiring message about what that school had done for him, and that they had the same ability through education and dedication and hard work to achieve the same things that he's achieved," said Bradley. "It was very well received by the students and the staff because it really is a message that he's lived his whole life about. It's about being the best of the best and doing everything you can to be the best person."

Hadfield was the guest of honour last August at a celebration at Sarnia's Bayshore Park that recognized his induction into the 2018 Canada Walk of Fame. He chose the Sarnia school he attended as a boy as the location for the permanent display of his star.

As part of the celebration, the Canadian Walk of Fame donated $10,000 in Hadfield's name to the Mike Weir Foundation to help build a youth mental health facility in Sarnia-Lambton.
