Mayor sees legacy opportunity in Hiawatha slots return

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley is pleased to hear that slots are returning to Hiawatha Horse Park after being removed six years ago.

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey made the announcement at the London Line track Thursday morning.

"Well, I'm delighted," said Bradley. "Since the slots were closed in 2012, I don't think anyone won from that decision. It brought revenue into the city, it created tourism opportunities at Hiawatha -- and I can say that as one of the three mayors in Ontario that negotiated the 5 per cent for all Ontario communities back in the Mike Harris era. That money helped us do things we normally couldn't do."

Bradley said he hopes council saves the extra revenue for projects to help modernize the city.

"One of the things I'll be recommending to the new council is this, don't treat it as revenue into your regular budget. Put it aside, build up the principal and then use that interest for those unique legacy projects that this community wants and needs," he said.

Bradley said he gave the same suggestion to council many years ago.

"Over $36 million came through the city of Sarnia, and I can't point to any outstanding legacy from that money. We have a new opportunity with this great announcement from the provincial government," he said.

Bradley has confirmed with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) that the city will receive 5.25 per cent of the first $65 million received.

He said before the slots can be moved in, the city will have to consult with the public -- in person or online -- and council will be asked to pass a resolution to accept gaming at the site again.

Bradley believes those steps can be accomplished by the newly elected council in early 2019.
