Downtown Transit Terminal Upgrade Proposed

Sarnia's mayor likes what he sees in a proposed $480,000 upgrade of the downtown transit terminal.

City staff is recommending the eastbound lane on George St. and the westerly southbound lane on Vidal St. be closed and specially marked for use by buses only.

The entire curb and sidewalk areas would be reconstructed and 16 parking spaces removed on the north side of the Bayside Centre parking lot.

Mayor Mike Bradley says it's an affordable alternative.

"It's a positive direction, we can't afford a brand new bus terminal at $3-million to $4-million," says Bradley. "This would enhance the safety and friendliness of the bus service in the downtown as we continue to look at expansion of the bus service in the Zehrs plaza."

Council allocated $500,000 for upgrading of the downtown terminal in its 2015 capital budget.

The proposal will be considered during Monday's meeting of city council.

If approved, the project would be timed for July or August, 2016 and take six to eight weeks to complete.

During construction buses would be temporarily relocated to the east side of Christina St. in front of the Kenwick Building.
