'A Lot Of Good' In Joe The Cat Story

The Sarnia and District Humane Society says a lot of good has come from the much publicized case of Joe the cat, despite the dismissal of charges.

Animal cruelty charges against a Sarnia man were withdrawn Monday morning for lack of evidence.

While disappointed, the humane society's executive director says Joe's story has shone a very bright light on the growing problem of animal cruelty in the community.

"Because of his story, a lot of good has come and a lot of animals have been saved," says Donna Pyette.

"Joe himself is in a great home, living a wonderful life, that's a happy ending and that is what we wish for all of our animals."

Pyette adds they're grateful to Sarnia police and the Crown attorney's office for their hard work but says they "understand and acknowledge the reasoning behind the decision" to drop the charges.

Charges against a second man had previously been withdrawn.

The case first came to light in early 2014 when a cat with 17 pellet gun shots to the head was found on Lakeshore Rd. in Bright's Grove.

The Sarnia Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responds to over 4,000 complaints each year.

Anyone suspecting animal cruelty or abuse is asked to call 310 SPCA. (7722)
