Public Health monitoring Grey-Bruce residents linked to cruise ship Hantavirus outbreak

Grey Bruce Public Health says two Canadians connected to the MV Hondius cruise ship situation are residents of Grey-Bruce and remain in isolation locally.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Brittany Graham says the individuals are not showing any symptoms of illness related to the Hantavirus, and continue to be monitored closely by public health officials.

"The individuals are well and are not experiencing any symptoms of illness," Graham said in the statement. "They are isolating within the same household in Grey-Bruce and are being actively supported and monitored by Grey Bruce Public Health for the period of time required to ensure public safety."

Public health says staff are checking in with the individuals daily to monitor their condition and ensure isolation requirements are being followed. Protocols are also in place to connect them with health care services if needed.

Graham says the risk to the public remains "extremely low" because the individuals are asymptomatic and following all public health guidance.

"As always, further information will not be shared about the individuals to protect their privacy and confidentiality," Graham added.

The update comes as federal officials prepare to hold a technical briefing on the Andes hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius expedition cruise ship.

Officials with the Public Health Agency of Canada, Global Affairs Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency are expected to provide more information on the outbreak and the federal response.
