Nearly 1,600 pigs killed in barn fire

Damage is estimated at $1.5 million after a barn fire southeast of Mount Forest that killed hundreds of pigs.

Wellington North firefighters were called to the burning pig barn on Sideroad 5E near Derrynane just after 4:30 p.m. on Monday. When crews arrived the large barn was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from the Minto and Dundalk fire departments were called in to help battle the blaze and to shuttle water. The blaze was extinguished shortly after 9:30 p.m.

No firefighters or civilians were hurt, however 1,599 pigs died in the fire, Deputy Fire Chief Callise Loos confirmed.

The barn was destroyed.

Loos added that the origin and cause of the fire cannot be determined due to the extent of the damage.
