The Coastal Conservation Youth Corps returned to Goderich for the fifth year in late July to continue annual education and stewardship work along the shoreline.
From July 28-30, 10 high school volunteers from Goderich and the surrounding area helped with things like beach clean-ups, restoration work, and invasive species removal. The participants all had opportunities to learn about shoreline ecology, plastic pollution and coastal processes.
The first day of the program involved a beach cleanup at Black's Point beach, where participants removed just under 20 lbs of litter, including removing six tires. Day two saw volunteers make a trip to the Old Ausable Channel to do restoration work. Finally, volunteers spent the last day at the youth-led restoration site at Sunset Park in Goderich. That involved the further removal of invasive plant species along the bluff at the park, followed by the planting of native soil stabilizing species to prevent bluff erosion.
The Lake Huron Coastal Centre is continuing beach clean-up efforts locally throughout the rest of the summer. That includes clean-ups in Kincardine on August 15, Grand Bend on September 3, and Sarnia on September 19.
