New dock makes river more accessible in St. Marys

A new dock, unveiled on June 2, is encouraging accessibility for community members in St. Marys. The dock was funded through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario and a community donation.

Residents brought forward the need for a dock in a survey conducted last year. A media release from the Town of St. Marys said river usage has risen significantly since 2020 after the town launched its free kayak loan program.

"The dock is a wonderful addition to our community that will significantly improve access to the Thames River," said Mayor Al Strathdee. "We are grateful for the support from Community Living, the Government of Canada, and the Upper Thames Conservation Authority."

The new dock features a stable and secure platform, a kayak launch assist mechanism, handrails, grab bars, and transfer benches.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority granted permission for the placement of the dock, however, it has to be removed in the off-season and whenever there's a risk of flooding.
