Third person charged in $43K stolen property probe

Grey Bruce OPP have made a third arrest in a a series of break-ins since last summer in Meaford, Grey Highlands, and Southgate Township.

Police launched the investigation last August as thieves targeted residences and businesses in the three areas, making off with various items. Investigators discovered approximately $43,000 in stolen property, including power tools, chainsaws, a welder, and a .22 calibre semi-automatic rifle at a business on Bell Circle in Dundalk, as well as at a second location on 7th Line in Meaford early last week. A 19-year-old and an 18-year-old, both from Grey Highlands, were arrested and charged.

On Friday, police announced a 35-year-old man from Melancthon has also been taken into custody in relation to the investigation. He is charged with six offences including careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and possession of a firearm obtained by crime. The man appeared in Owen Sound court, where police said he was released with a future court date.

Most of the recovered stolen property has been returned to its rightful owners.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
