Bruce-Grey region gets investment via Gas Tax program

The Ontario government is giving back over $1 million to the region to improve transit.

The office of MPP Rick Byers announced which groups would benefit from the Gas Tax program funding on Friday, with three different transit systems receiving a share.

The City of Owen Sound is getting nearly $246,000 to support its public bus system.

“Local public transit is an essential service in our community, helping people get to work, school, and medical appointments," said Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy. "This investment from the Province through the Gas Tax program will allow us to continue to provide a high level of transit service in Owen Sound while supporting our growing region.

The Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART) Corporation is getting nearly $741,000.

“The gas tax funding directly supports SMART on behalf of the Municipalities of Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Chatsworth, Grey Highlands, Hanover, Huron-Kinloss, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Southgate and West Grey,” said Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson. “SMART is an important service in our region, providing an accessible transit option for our residents to get to and from commitments such as medical appointments, community events and shopping.”

Finally, Meaford Moves+ will nearly $66,000.

For every litre of provincial gas tax revenue collected in the previous year, two cents are allocated to the Gas Tax program.
