Habitat for Humanity Huron County broke ground Sunday afternoon on a new home for a young family in Goderich.
Resource Development Heather Glenister said the latest home is being built at 158 Anglesea Street in Goderich.
She called it another milestone of bringing communities together to help families.
"It's a very exciting for the family for all of us and habitat as we as we continue to provide, you know, homes for people and particularly within the housing crisis," she revealed. "I think it will be even more important work that habitat does."
Glenister pointed out that Habitat for Humanity has built 18 homes in the region.
"We've been very lucky. We've had homes from Exeter, Hensall, and this is our sixth build in Goderich. So that is really the priority of finding, you know, the land to be able to build these lovely homes on," she explained. "Everything from foundation to you know painting walls is pretty much volunteer led."
She said they rely on donations, and volunteers to get the job done.
"We do have contractors that help us out, absolutely, we can't do it all on our own. That would be unrealistic. Certainly, you know, so many hands come together in the community to be able to put these homes together," she added. "The families themselves, they're involved. They do 500 hours partnership hours, volunteer hours, with us as part of the down payment."
Glenister revealed that having a home can build self reliance and security thanks to Habitat's affordable home ownership program.
"It's a great opportunity to be able to put down roots somewhere and I think that is something that we hear over and over and over again. That is, I'm providing some stability for my family," she said.
When the home is complete, Lori and her two children, Tia and Taylor, will be ready to move in. Habitat holds the mortgage, which is set at 30 per cent of the family's income.
