Provincial police have fully re-opened the Highway 401 after a fatal crash prompted an overnight closure just east of Chatham.
OPP said the collision took place near the 96 Kilometer Marker and claimed the life of a 41-year-old Leamington resident.
Police said they were initially called in just after 1 a.m. Tuesday for a rollover crash in the westbound lanes of the Hwy. 401, but while officers were on their way to the scene, they were notified that a second collision had taken place between a transport truck and the vehicle that had rolled over.
Officers said as a result of the second collision, the transport truck went across the centre median and the eastbound lanes before it ended up in a field.
Police said the passenger vehicle that rolled over had two people inside who were both taken to the hospital, but one of them was later pronounced deceased.
The driver of the passenger vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the transport truck was not hurt.
At this time, OPP are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage of the incident.
Police are also reminding drivers to take extra caution while they are in areas of the Hwy. 401 that are open but congested.
Officers said they have received reports of "several additional minor collision" in sections of the highway that were beyond the closure, which caused further delays to re-opening the highway.
