A new "state-of-the-art" long-term care facility is now under construction in Huron County.
Southbridge Goderich will be open to residents as soon as early 2025. The space will offer 69 brand new beds and 91 that have been refurbished to meet modern design standards.
"The health and safety of our residents is our number one priority," said Ryan Bell, CEO of Southbridge Care Homes. "We are excited to be breaking ground on Southbridge Goderich, our fifth new long-term care home, where residents will experience a modern, safe and community-minded approach to living."
The new facility will feature home-like areas with bedrooms, lounges, dining and activity areas, larger common areas, and ample air conditioning. Future residents of Southbridge Goderich will also have access to behavioral support and palliative care services thanks to the home's integrated care model.
"Recognizing the need for facilities such as this in our community, this state-of-the-art development will be a vital amenity for so many and serve as a major employer in this area," said Myles Murdock, mayor of Goderich.
The addition of 160 beds in Goderich comes as part of Ontario's $6.4-billion commitment to building over 30,000 new long-term care beds and upgrading another 28,000 by 2028.
On top of Southbridge Goderich, similar projects are in the works for other areas in Huron County, including Exeter and the Township of Morris-Turnberry. Together, the new long-term care homes will bring 181 new beds and 363 upgraded beds to the region, for a total of 544.
"These projects will help Ontario address the growing demand for long-term care," said a statement from the Ontario government. "This will help increase overall bed capacity, address long-term care waitlists and hallway health care, and provide our seniors the care they deserve."
