The number of calls for assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police in Wellington County dropped by almost a quarter in 2020 compared to the year before.
During a recent Wellington Police Services Board meeting, Wellington OPP Detachment Commander Paul Richardson said the service responded to 23,990 calls in 2020, compared to almost 32,000 calls in 2019.
The number is the lowest total for calls for service since 2016.
Richardson noted that 9-1-1 calls also dropped, with only 568 calls in 2020 compared to 3,776 the year prior.
The report showed a drop in 2020 for most types of crime, including assaults, break and enters, as well as drug and fraud investigations, however crimes like domestic disputes and robberies rose, while the number of sexual assaults also rose slightly (from 56 to 59).
