Inquest Opens Into Firefighter Training Deaths Near Hanover-Sarnia

The inquest into the deaths of two men who died in firefighter cold water rescue training in Hanover and Sarnia starts Tuesday.

Adam Brunt, a 30-year-old volunteer firefighter from Bowmanville, died while training in Hanover in the Saugeen River in February of 2015. He became trapped underneath the ice.

Gary Kendall was 51 at the time of his death during a training exercise in January 2010, and he too was trapped under the ice.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding their deaths and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last two weeks and to hear from approximately 15-18 witnesses.
