Meaford's Plan To Lease Indoor Pool Is Scrapped

It looks like Meaford residents who were looking forward to Aquafit and other swimming programs without having to leave the municipality are out of luck.

Treasurer Darcy Chapman told council this week that Meaford's Parks and Recreation director received a letter last month from Maryann Barrie. She is the property manager at Brookside Condominiums in Meaford.

In her letter, Barrie said the condo owners held a special meeting January 26, with 85% of the owners present.  The meeting was held to discuss Meaford’s request to lease the indoor swimming pool.

Barrie says members decided the scope and use of the pool Meaford needed “far exceeds the level of involvement the owners are prepared to agree to at this time.”

Barrie adds that some owners also worried that opening the indoor pool facilities to the public would lower the value of their properties.

Chapman says that since negotiations to lease the pool have broken down, council could now go ahead with its alternative plan for the funds.

That plan called for transferring part or all the $55,000 set aside for the project to various infrastructure projects.

Council voted to re-invest $28,000 of the total into various infrastructure projects. The remaining funds will be transferred as needed.
