Event at local speedway to raise funds for Special Olympics, features NASCAR alumni

Full Throttle Motor Speedway in Varney will be hosting a big event on Saturday, as they welcome some big names to the track for a fundraiser.

Gord Bennett, who owns Full Throttle, says the event will be for Special Olympics fundraising.

"It's a special event featuring the Braveheart 100, which is for North Wellington Special Olympics. There's lots of prizes, lots of giveaways, and we brought in three NASCAR drivers."

The drivers participating will be Kenny Wallace, Kenny Schrader and Norm Benning. The racing begins Saturday at 6 pm and tickets are 14 dollars for general admission, 2 dollars for kids 10 and younger and 3 and under get in free. There are also 20 dollar pit passes, and 100 dollar VIP packages which include a BBQ and meet-and-greet prior to the races. Bennett says he purchased the former Varney Speedway 6 years ago, and a partnership already existed with Special Olympics.

"North Wellington Special Olympics was already the 50-50 supplier for the speedway and they've been that ever since. So we generate money through 50-50 and the Braveheart 100 for them every year since I've owned the speedway."

Bennett says he wanted to continue supporting Special Olympics and Saturday will continue that effort. He also says on top of the great cause that the evening will support, fans who haven't visited the track in awhile can expect some significant changes.

"The speedway has expanded and has a tri-oval back straightaway. Back in the day there was no wall and the cars would go up and over the back side of the speedway. Now the track is a lot bigger and has a wall around that part of the speedway, and it's a lot faster."

There are also new grandstands and VIP seating areas, a new entrance set-up for ticket purchases, tailgate parking with a short-circuit FM channel for the races and the campground as well among many other improvements.
