Cyclones look ahead to next round of GOJHL playoffs

The Listowel Cyclones did not lose focus winning in Brampton 9-3 Thursday night and swept the quarter-final series.

After giving up an early goal, at 2:27 of the first period, Listowel responded by scoring six unanswered goals.

Darcy Winkler scored on the power play at 4:37 and the flood gates opened. Trent Verbeek then made it 2-1 followed by the natural hat trick by Harlen VanWynesberghe. All three goals of those goals came on the power play. Then Trent Verbeek scored his second of the game with just over a minute left in the period.

Brampton was able to notch a couple more in the second period but Brayden Krieger also scored for Listowel. Jamie Damignani and Rylan Bowers rounded out the Cyclones' scoring in the third period.

Forward Chayse Herrfort was not in the line up for Listowel Thursday night and the team rested defenceman Brenden Clayton for another game.

Goalie Riley McCabe got his first start of the series and picked up the win in the Listowel net.

Listowel will have to wait for the Stratford-Brantford series to end and if Stratford wins, then Listowel gets the winner of Elmira-Kitchener.

That series goes to Game 7 Saturday afternoon in Kitchener at 3:30 p.m.

Waterloo 6 Cambridge 3

The Waterloo Siskins will move on to the second round after winning on home ice against Cambridge to clinch the series 4-1.

Waterloo built up a 2-0 lead after the first period with Joseph Serpa and Brett Schaefer scoring.

The teams would exchange goals in the second period, each scoring twice.

But Waterloo had to hold on through the third and didn't get some extra insurance until 17:21 of the third when Jeff Schrattner gave Waterloo a three goal lead.

Cambridge would score with an extra attacker with under 30 seconds to play then Waterloo scored on an empty net to make the final 6-3.

The Siskins will have to wait to see what happens between Stratford and Brantford to see who their next opponent will be in the playoffs. If Startford wins, it will be the Warriors. If it is Brantford, Waterloo would face the winner of Elmira-Kitchener.

That series goes to Game 7 Saturday afternoon in Kitchener at 3:30 p.m.

Stratford 4 Brantford 2

The Stratford Warriors came back from a rare loss at home to double Brantford and take a 3-1 series lead in their quarter-final.

But Stratford allowed Brantford to score the first goal of the game late in the first period. Dylan Lebold then scored for the Warriors with under a minute to play to tie things up at one.

In the second period, Stratford built up a two goal lead with goals from Clayton Lewis and Kameron Shearer. Brantford would make it interesting, scoring shortly thereafter and kept it a one goal lead until late in the third period.

Shearer scored his second goal of the game, on an empty net with just a minute left in the third period.

The teams go back to Stratford Friday night for Game 5 at 7:30 p.m.
