A new campaign aimed at encouraging people to buy from local farmer's markets will be launched in Wellington County next month.
Running during July and August, the “Farmers’ Market Price Check” Campaign will highlight how much more affordable the price of seasonal products is at farmer's markets compared to major grocery stores.
The collaborative effort involves a number of farmer's markets across Wellington County, including the Minto, Mapleton and Wellington North ones.
Each week, one market will feature a seasonal item available from a local vendor and compare its price to the average advertised price at major grocery stores during the same week.
On top of highlighting savings for customers, the campaign also aims to highlight other benefits of local farmer's markets. That includes supporting local farmers, food producers, and shopping Canadian, keeping dollars circulating within local communities and building connections between shoppers and the people who grow their food.
Residents are encouraged to follow their local market on social media throughout the season to see the weekly Farmers’ Market Price Check and discover what's fresh, local, and in season.
"We often hear people assume that shopping at a farmer's market is more expensive," says Erin Raftis, Market Manager at the Minto Farmers’ Market. "The reality is that many seasonal products are competitively priced, making it a great option for stocking up on weekly produce, and we wanted to create a fun and informative way to showcase that."
