Walkerton dog park on the move again

The Municipality of Brockton is moving the location of its temporary dog park once more.

At Tuesday's meeting, Mayor Chris Peabody made a notice of motion to reconsider their decision to pilot an off leash section along the Rail Trail and instead, put a temporary dog park at Riverbend Park.

Peabody said they said they received lots of comments about the Rail Trail not being a great spot for an off-leash spot, and this alternative would come at no cost.

"The rationale would be, certainly I've been getting lots of complaints about this, and I did get one resident asking about this option at Riverbend Park," he told council. "I didn't want to have the rec staff to have to do this, and I've got a good relationship with LiUNA and their pre-apprentices who are working right now on the job site. So I asked their trainer, as part of the job rotation, would they be able to help us out and set these fences up inside Riverbend?"

The temporary fencing would be the same that was used at the previous pilot dog park. Earlier this spring, council voted to remove the space at Lobies Park after complaints from nearby residents.

Peabody says the Riverbend park will only be in place this summer, as next year they'll look at building something more permanent on town-owned land in the Eastridge Business Park.

"I want to have a formal proposal for our grass field that we own behind (the LiUNA training centre). It's totally inaccessible now, but by spring, there will be a nice parking lot there and it will be very accessible," he said.

Councillor Steve Trevale suggested because they were going to advertise the changes allowing dogs off-leash along the Rail Trail, they might as well keep that in place alongside the Riverbend Park.
