Unattended cooking is being blamed for a blaze in Owen Sound that sent two people to hospital.
Emergency crews were called to a smoke-filled apartment on 4th Avenue after the fire broke out Wednesday night.
While tenants managed to extinguish the flames before fire crews arrived, firefighters had to ventilate the smoke from the building.
Two people were taken to hospital with burns. One was treated and released, while the other was transferred to a burn unit at a Toronto hospital for specialized care.
Damage is estimated at approximately $10,000.
Fire prevention investigators determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking.
"Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services remind residents that cooking should never be left unattended," the fire department said in a statement. "Staying in the kitchen while cooking and keeping a close watch on food being prepared can help prevent fires and injuries."
Fire officials added that if a fire starts in a pot or pan on the stove, a lid can be carefully slid over top to smother the flames. The heat source should then be switched off once it is safe to do so.
"Never move a burning pot or pan, and never use water on a grease fire, as it can cause the fire to spread rapidly," the fire department said.
