MS Chi-Cheemaun to sail three times a day by end of week

With the summer travel season set to begin, the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun will once again increase its number of daily crossings between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island.

Starting Friday, the Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC) will run the iconic ferry three times a day. It will depart from Tobermory at 8:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m., and 5:45 p.m. Return trips from Manitoulin Island will begin at 11 a.m., 3:30 p.m., and 7:45 p.m.

“The M.S. Chi-Cheemaun is a vital transportation link connecting communities, visitors, and businesses across Georgian Bay,” Ontario Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria said in a statement. “As another busy tourism season gets underway, we’re ramping up service to ensure thousands of visitors to Manitoulin Island, local residents, and businesses have a reliable option to get where they’re going each day.”

The three daily sailings will continue until September 7. After that, the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun returns to just once daily voyages until the season ends on October 18.

Last year saw a rise in both walk-on and vehicle traffic on the ferry that has been in service since 1974..

Travellers can book a reservation to sail through the Owen Sound Transportation Company's website www.ontarioferries.com/ms-chi-cheemaun or by calling 1-800-265-3163.
