Saugeen Municipal Airport aims to become 'self-sustaining' with new development plan

Homes with airplane hangars are just some of the ideas the Saugeen Municipal Airport Commission is exploring in their new development plan.

The plan was brought to West Grey and Hanover councils this week, receiving support from the two of its three member municipalities.

Commission Chair Dave Hocking said they're aiming to attract manufacturing, hospitality and even residential investments related to the local airport.

"Our goal would be by incorporating new businesses ranging from commerical and industrial and maybe looking into hangar homes on the residential side, the airport would become self-sustianing and no longer require municipal contributions," he said.

Hocking said the airport would still seek financial support from federal and provincial governments through infrastructure funding, noting those governments have stated their interest in expansion of the transportation sector.

The development plan will go to Brockton council later this month, ahead of its zoning by-law review.

Hocking said the airport's current zoning has hurt development opportunities.

"Our idea is to expand the potential availability. Right now we are hampered by the zoning, we did just lose a potential client because the zoning didn't allow it and they just got tired of waiting. We are excited and ready to go and it certainly will be a well addition to our aiport," he said.

The Commission will present to Brockton council on April 28.
