The spirit of Olivia Rourke resonated through the gym at Walkerton District Community School (WDCS) as Hoops for Hope returned for its second year.
Last Thursday, the event attracted hundreds of student-athletes, volunteers, and supporters for a day that celebrated community, competition, and an inspiring legacy. The 3-on-3 basketball tournament featured 20 boys' teams and 16 girls' teams from across Ontario, with games played at both WDCS and Sacred Heart High School. The event has quickly become one of the region's premier high school basketball tournaments, earning official recognition this year as an OFSAA regional event. Teams travelled from as far away as Windsor to take part.
Hoops for Hope was the vision of Olivia Rourke, a WDCS student whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident last year. In the wake of that loss, her family, friends, teachers, and the Walkerton community came together to ensure her dream would continue. Today, the tournament raises funds for the Olivia Rourke Foundation, which supports youth-led community projects, advances opportunities for women in sport, and contributes to cancer care and research.
This year's tournament raised approximately $12,000, surpassing the $10,000 collected during its inaugural year. Those funds will help carry forward the causes Olivia cared about so deeply.
On the court, Woodland claimed both the boys' and girls' championship titles, capping off a day filled with determination, teamwork, and outstanding sportsmanship from every team involved.
One of the most moving moments came when the play paused for Olivia's family to address the crowd. Joined by daughter Halle, Olivia's parents Jen and Dan Rourke reflected on the remarkable young woman whose dream brought everyone together.

"While her life was far too short, the impact she made on those around her was extraordinary. This foundation exists to keep Olivia’s legacy alive by supporting students and causes that reflect the opportunities, values, and passions that helped shape the remarkable person she became."
Family members shared stories of Olivia's boundless encouragement, her natural leadership, and her love of sports. It was her passion for basketball, combined with a desire to honour her mother's battle with breast cancer, that first inspired the idea for Hoops for Hope as she prepared for her future studies at Queen's University. Though Olivia never had the chance to see the tournament become reality, her vision continues to thrive.
"Although Olivia is no longer with us, her spirit lives on through every life this foundation touches. Her legacy is one of joy, compassion, leadership, and encouragement—and it is our greatest honour to carry that forward," the family noted. "Olivia would be thrilled to be a part of today, to see so many young people together, having fun, playing basketball, and supporting one another. The energy today is truly what she was all about."
The Rourke family also extended heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers, athletes, coaches, sponsors, and spectators who made the day possible, and to the dedicated organizing committee whose efforts helped Hoops for Hope continue to grow.
What began as one young woman's dream has become a powerful force for good, ensuring Olivia's kindness, leadership, and love for others will continue making a difference for years to come.
