Huron County man found guilty of illegal spearfishing

A Huron County man has been fined $6,000 for illegally spearfishing.

Jason Nieuwenhoff was also prohibited from fishing in Ontario for three years, after the case appeared in Goderich court earlier this year.

Conservation officers reportedly found the man attempting to spear rainbow trout at 3a.m. in April 2025, despite not possessing a valid sport fishing licence.

Nieuwenhoff was found guiltiy of two counts of using a spear to fish, two counts of possessing a spear within 30 metres of the water’s edge, two counts of fishing without a licence and one count of fishing during prohibited night hours.

He was also required to surrender his spearfishing equipment to the Crown.
