OPP officer's gun grabbed during arrest of snowmobiler

A snowmobiler is alleged to have grabbed an OPP officer's gun while being arrested after a crash north of Walkerton.

The incident began with South Bruce OPP being called about a snowmobile traveling through the town without its lights switched on around 2:50 a.m. on Monday.

Officers found the snowmobile crashed in the area of Bruce Road 19 and Concession 2 NDR East and began searching for the driver, who had taken off from the scene. Police blocked off the area and advised the public to temporarily steer clear.

A suspect was found shortly after 6 a.m. The man reportedly resisted arrest and is alleged to have grabbed one of the officer's holstered firearms. He was quickly subdued and taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

A 40-year-old man from Huron-Kinloss is charged with dangerous driving, resisting a peace officer, disarming a peace officer, driving while prohibited, and possession of drugs. The man appeared for a bail hearing where he was remanded into custody, police said.
