Teen impaired driver caught thanks to community tip

The Owen Sound Police Service is highlighting a community tip that led to charges against a teen for impaired driving.

According to police, early on Saturday morning, they responded to a report of a suspected impaired driver in Owen Sound’s downtown core.

Officers located the vehicle traveling through a residential neighborhood. A traffic stop was conducted, and it was determined that the driver had consumed an unknown amount of alcohol.

A roadside breath test confirmed the 18-year-old Owen Sound man was over the legal limit.

The individual was taken for further testing by a qualified breath technician and as a result, was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg per 100 ml.

Due to the driver's age and licence status, he also faces charges as a novice driver with an above zero blood alcohol concentration.

The accused was released with a court date scheduled for January, his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle he was operating was impounded for seven days.

The Owen Sound Police Service encourages anyone who suspects impaired driving to call 9-1-1 immediately.
