Bruce Power extends use of W.E. Thompson School to 2032

The former W.E. Thompson School in downtown Kincardine will continue to serve as a Bruce Power training hub for the rest of the decade.

Bruce Power and the Municipality of Kincardine have reached a new lease agreement that extends the company’s use of the building as a training facility until the end of 2032, following a review of the property’s condition and future needs.

Mayor Kenneth Craig says the deal preserves an important partnership with the nuclear sector, while giving the municipality time to plan for the long-term future of the site. "We appreciate the history of the W.E. Thompson site and the partnership with Bruce Power to use this space to help support the nuclear sector" said Craig. "This decision allows us to look at a long-term opportunity for our community for this important property."

Bruce Power SVP of Operations Services and Digital Technology, Jennifer Edey, says the timing lines up with the completion of the company’s Major Component Replacement project, and that future training needs will be managed through existing facilities in the community. "Bruce Power remains committed to supporting the Municipality of Kincardine and the region" said Edey. "The timing of this coincides with the completion of the Major Component Replacement project, and with our other investments in local training facilities we will manage our training needs through existing facilities within the community."

There are no immediate changes planned at W.E. Thompson. The municipality says the extended lease provides a multi-year runway to develop a community-driven vision for the prime downtown location, and residents will be updated as plans move forward.
