The Bluewater District School Board welcomed more students this fall, with preliminary numbers showing a boost of 236 compared to last year.
That brings total enrolment in public schools across Bruce and Grey counties to just over 18,900 students in 41 elementary and nine secondary schools, continuing a steady upward trend.
Director of Education AJ Keene says the increase is a positive reflection of the region’s growth. "Families are entrusting their children with Bluewater due to the quality of education we provide," Keene said. "As our numbers climb, we are also investing in the future through new school builds, infrastructure upgrades, program enhancements, and a continued focus on improving academic outcomes for every student."
Enrolment at Bluewater schools has grown by 14 percent over the past five years, up from just over 16,500 students in 2020. The board says higher enrolment improves school utilization rates, which in turn allows for more reinvestment in programs.
Keene adds that new projects are helping meet the growing demand. Two new schools are underway in Dundalk and Port Elgin, while Kincardine is set for a new replacement build. Last spring also marked the opening of a state-of-the-art replacement for Beavercrest Community School in Markdale.
Enrolment counts are reported twice a year to the Ministry of Education to determine provincial funding levels.
Keene says Bluewater remains committed to creating safe, inclusive, and equitable classrooms. "This year’s enrolment increase is great news for our board and the communities we serve," he said.
