The Town of Hanover has revised its flag policy, ensuring that some national symbols won't need a proclamation in order to be flown each year.
This summer, council approved a notice of motion to review its Flag and Proclamation Protocol, after observing other municipalities reviewing their policies.
This month, council approved several changes to the protocol, agreeing to fly the Every Child Matters Flag at the Civic Centre from September 1 to 30, as well as flying the Pride Flag from June 1 to 7.
Other changes included revising the half-staffing period for the National Flag at seven days, while also adding a half-staffing policy for the Municipal Flag. This will occur in the event of the passing of an active committee member appointed to a committee of council, the death of a prominent Hanover resident, or during a Town or regional period of mourning.
Following upgrades to the Civic Centre's exterior lighting system this year that now allow for it to project colours, proclamation requests can also be made for the building's illumination.
In order to streamline the process, the Town has created a formal Request Form for flag raisings, proclamations, and lighting requests. Staff ask that they're filed at least four weeks prior to the date requested. Requests will be handled on a first come, first served basis.
