Listowel Wingham Hospital Alliance celebrates year-long return of Obstetrics Program

On September 16, the Listowel Wingham Hospital Alliance (LWHA) celebrated one year of the Obstetrics Program being back in service.

The program got back underway last fall following "an unusual set of circumstances that led to a temporary pause in 2024 due to multiple staff maternity leaves," according to the LWHA.

Since the reintroduction of the program in Listowel, there are now 14 core clinical staff and five family physicians providing labour, delivery, and obstetrical care, and the team is on track to support more than 130 deliveries in 2025.

Families can be referred by their family physician or may contact the obstetrics clinic directly to discuss their care options. Information is available on the LWHA website.

"I am incredibly proud of our obstetrics team and the dedication they have shown over the past year," shared Esther Millar, Chief Executive Officer of LWHA. "When we faced the challenge of temporarily pausing the program, our staff stepped forward, worked extra hours, and came together to make sure we could reopen stronger than ever. Families in our region can trust that we are here to provide safe, compassionate, and high-quality care at one of life’s most important moments."

"Delivering babies and supporting growing families is one of the greatest privileges in medicine," said Dr. Ian Cameron, Physician Lead for the Obstetrics Program. "Our team is committed to providing excellent care right here in Listowel so families do not need to travel far to receive it. We want the community to know that we are here for them, and we look forward to welcoming many more healthy births in the years ahead."

"Our nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals are truly exceptional," added Mary-Lou Albers, Senior Manager of Inpatient and Obstetrical Services at Listowel Memorial Hospital and Manager of Professional Practice at LWHA. "They work together with a level of professionalism and compassion that creates a world-class environment for patients and their families. The last year has been a remarkable chapter for our program, and we are only getting started."
