The province's electricity grid got a workout this week, as temperatures set 50-year highs in several communities.
With highs of over 34 Celsius, feeling in the 40s with the humidity, air conditioners ran everywhere, resulting in a five-year high for peak electricity demand in Ontario.
According to figures from the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday, peak electricity demand in the province hit 24,712 Megawatts.
Initial peak values for the same hour on Tuesday, show an even higher demand of 24,862 MW, although those figures have yet to be finalized.
This was the first time since the summer of 2020, that peak demand in the province topped 24,000 MW.
Over a third of that demand was met with nuclear generation, followed by gas, hydro and wind.
